Is a battery the same as 건전지(a dry cell)?
Well… sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Most of the AA/AAA-sized power sources we buy at the store can be called 배터리 or 건전지. But! In daily life, people are more likely to say 건전지 than AA 배터리.

However! We never call the power source of a phone or a car 건전지. Even dictionaries define 배터리 in a broader way—it includes rechargeable power sources, not just disposable ones.

For example:
📱 "My phone battery is dead."
       핸드폰 배터리가 없어.
🚗 "My car battery is out."
       차 배터리가 나갔어.
⚡ "I need to charge the battery."
       배터리를 충전해야겠어.

In all these cases, we only use 배터리.

Since we now prefer rechargeable devices over ones that need replaceable 건전지, I hesitated when I saw a jump rope that required those small round 건전지. It made me wonder… will 건전지 disappear one day? What do you think?
