Today, I’d like to share a fun Korean expression with you.
Today was a public holiday in Korea, and it was raining.
I went to a café I’d been wanting to visit for a long time… but guess what? It was closed. 😭

There’s a Korean expression for moments like this.
It’s “가는 날이 장날.”
Literally, jangnal means “market day.” In the countryside, traditional markets are usually held once every four or five days, and they get extremely crowded. It can be so busy that you can barely walk through.
So we use this expression when something unexpected happens and ruins your plan — like bad timing or unfortunate coincidence.
There are similar variations like:
“오는 날이 장날”
“가는 날이 생일”
For example:
I went to the library, but it was closed for a holiday.
Just my luck!
I traveled to Malaysia, but it was school vacation, so there were no hotel rooms available.
Talk about bad timing!
You can use it like that.
Have you ever had something like this happen to you?
